When the Clock Changes but Our Bodies Don’t
Every year when the clocks shift, either direction, it takes me about a week to re-find my groove and I am reminded of how small changes can wreak havoc on my mind. This week, I’ve been waking up at least an hour earlier than usual (hello, 4:45am!), with my body seeming to think it’s doing the right thing, but my energy and focus tell a different story.
Sleep changes like this might seem minor, but they can have a real impact. When we’re not getting the rest we need, our stress response system becomes more reactive. Anxiety can creep in more easily, patience can wear thin, and even small things, like navigating a busy mall, can suddenly feel overstimulating and overwhelming. I felt that firsthand yesterday with my brain spinning from overwhelm while walking around Vaughan Mills and later navigating the subway with an unexpected detour.
The truth is, our nervous systems thrive on rhythm and predictability. A time change, even just one hour, can throw off that rhythm, especially when we’re already carrying stress or navigating big changes in our lives.
So this week, I’m giving myself permission to slow down and rest where I can. I’m focusing on connecting with family, moving my body daily, eating nourishing meals, and keeping a healthy sleep routine.
If you’ve also been feeling “off” this week, know that it’s not just you. Be gentle with yourself. Let your body adjust.
